Why don't students complete their assigned readings?
For your first assignment in Sociology class you created a survey to attempt to find out why many students do not complete their assigned readings? What did you discover? What is your opinion? (Please back-up your opinion with your research).
I don't think teachers realize, or respect the fact that some students have lifes outside of school. I understand that it's their responsibility to get their work done, but if you're in extra curricular activities that the school offers, such as a sport or club, and maybe even on top of that have their own part time job, school may be the last thing on their mind.
ya but the school district tells you your education comes before the sports, and clubs. Also on top of that if your marks get to low or you aren't handing in assignments are they not supposed to remove you from the team?
Personally, I believe that teachers are fully aware of the fact we have lives outside of school. For that reason, we have a second half of our lunch period, as well as study block, to help us complete our work.
Some people slack off in study block, but anyone who has jobs, or play in sports and have little time at home to work, need this, and most of the time they use this.
Teachers are there to do one thing and that's there job, no matter what you do extra curricular, everyone deserves the same amount of work. So saying Teachers aren't aware of what we do after school your wrong on the most part.
I think teenagers are simply too lazy and too concerned of their social lives to care about smaller scale assignments such as reading. Students also aren't typically good at time management, which I have proven in my findings. Usually reading is last on their priority lists.
i think that is part of what amys survery said/I agree with what amy said in class about the weed many of my friends who smoke it were better in school when they didnt now they just dont care.
In my opinion I think there are many different reasons why students do not complete their assigned readings some simply don't care or in other cases some legitimately do not have the time. Some people may struggle to remember about their readings and some may be easily distracted by other things I do not think there is just a single reason why they do not read their assigned readings. I learned from my survey that one of these distractions are technology but as I said it is only part of the problem
if its that they struggle to remember - what about the assigned readings DURING class? ex. "Flip to page 41 and read paragraph two." why dont they do those then?
personally i think its a matter of the person because i don't do my own assignments in cert-en classes because i find that class boring or not useful but were some of the people i talk to go out of there way for that class so i think its just a matter of who you are and your opinion
From my survey, I found that people would be more likely to complete homework, whether it's reading or something else, if they get something out of it. I found that if the student finds the homework worth while, as in, if they got marks out of it, if they required the information, or some other reason, it would have a better chance of getting completed. It seems that, like dogs performing tricks for treats, we humans prefer to look only to the immediate future for reward, and less on how the reading will affect their grades later on.
I believe that students don`t do there work or don't do it to the best of there ability when they know that following this reading they will have a pile of work to do with it, also I think that if the student knows that the reading assignment is going to count for a lot of marks then they would be more pushed to do it, if not then they just wont take the time to do it. Personally, if I do not enjoy the class I'm doing the reading assignment in or I know I'm not going to get marks for it I wouldn't put as much effort into it or I wouldn't do it at all.
Personally id prefer to read for a homework assignment rather than write an essay, or do a bunch of questions cause reading takes no actual effort, you literally just have to read, out of all homework i think your pretty dumb if that's the homework you choose not to do.
I feel the reason kid don't do school work is highly motivated by the fact of spending to much time in front of a computer or tv all day, and because of this they never get work done, and have to get caught up before the class starts.
My reasoning for students not completing their assigned readings is because some people simply don't care. If you are a good student that enjoys school and wants to have a successful future you usually tend to do your homework no matter what. Extra curricular activities should come after your school work unless you plan on making money by gaming or playing sports or whatever else you do.
